This week, we’re reflecting on the 50th anniversary of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) – a landmark law signed in October 1974 that continues to impact the financial lives of Americans, particularly women and historically marginalized communities. At Prosperity Connection, we witness firsthand how financial access transforms people’s lives, reminding us of the progress we’ve made – and the work still ahead.
Before the ECOA, creditors could legally deny credit applications based on gender, marital status, race, or even family planning decisions. This meant that for many women and marginalized groups, building a secure financial future was nearly impossible. Today, thanks to the ECOA, our clients have the right to access credit without discrimination, paving the way for their financial independence and the ability to make choices that build their futures on their terms.
As a nonprofit deeply rooted in St. Louis, Prosperity Connection has long worked to expand financial access for everyone in our community. Our free financial education and coaching programs, like 1-on-1 Financial Coaching, budgeting classes, and credit-building support, aim to empower people to understand and improve their finances, build confidence, and unlock financial opportunities that may have been out of reach for previous generations. The ECOA has opened the door to financial independence for over 70% of our clients. Many are women, Black, and from low- to moderate-income backgrounds who, thanks to this law, can access credit on more equal terms.
While the ECOA made critical progress, financial inequities remain in St. Louis and across the nation. Many still face systemic challenges, from predatory lending practices to barriers in accessing capital. That’s why our mission at Prosperity Connection is more relevant than ever. We’re committed to supporting St. Louisans in building the confidence, knowledge, and skills they need to navigate these challenges and make informed financial decisions.
Fifty years after the signing of the ECOA, we reflect on both the progress made and the persistent gaps that prevent true financial equity. Our commitment to this mission means we’re here to walk alongside our clients, helping them overcome barriers, achieve their financial goals, and secure their futures.
This anniversary isn’t just a time to celebrate a law. It’s a reminder of where we’ve been and a call for us to collectively build on its legacy. We’re proud to play a role in making St. Louis a place where everyone, regardless of gender, race, or income, can access the financial tools and resources they deserve.
