It’s already starting: all of the back-to-school ads and events. Whether you love it or hate it, the kiddos will be heading back to school in no time and that means school supplies. School supplies can get quite expensive, whether it’s the classic pencils and papers or the latest laptop. Here are some tips and tricks on how to save money on your back-to-school essentials.

3-Day Tax Holiday

Missouri has a 3-day sales tax holiday where certain items are exempt from sales tax, and the savings that result can really add up. This year in 2023, the tax holiday begins Friday, August 4th at 12:01 am and runs through Sunday, August 6th at midnight. This applies to in-store purchases as well as online purchases. However, there is a limit to the amount of money that is tax exempt. Make sure you check the Missouri Department of Revenue to see if your city or county is participating in this tax-free holiday because there are some municipalities that are choosing not to participate.

Tax Exempt Items

  • School supplies – cannot exceed $50 per purchase
  • Clothing – anything having a taxable value of $100 or less
  • Computers – cannot exceed $1500
  • Software – taxable value of $350 or less
  • Computer accessories – cannot exceed $1,500
  • Graphic calculators – cannot exceed $150
